Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist – Supervisor
About Amy
Amy Dean is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist-Supervisor (LMFT-S) and the founder of Lake Conroe Counseling Center. With over 25 years of experience, she works with kids, teens, young adults, couples, and families — specializing in grief and loss, especially in younger clients. Amy creates a space where people feel heard, understood, and less alone as they navigate some of life’s hardest moments.
Her Focus & Approach
Amy believes therapy works best when it feels like a conversation, not a checklist. She specializes in helping children, teens, and young adults process grief and loss — whether from death, divorce, moves, or other major transitions. She also works with suicidal ideation, self-harm, anxiety, relationship conflict, and the overwhelming feelings that come when life gets too hard. She uses play and art in the therapy room with clients of all ages to facilitate communication and build rapport. Her approach is warm, direct, and grounded in decades of experience sitting with people through some of their hardest moments.
Whether you’re a kid trying to make sense of something that doesn’t make sense, a teen feeling stuck or overwhelmed, or a family trying to find your way through loss or change, Amy meets you where you are and helps you figure out where you want to go.
Her Background
Amy earned her Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University in 1994 and became fully licensed in 1999. She spent nearly 20 years living and working internationally across six different countries, supporting families, couples, and individuals navigating cross-cultural transitions, identity shifts, and the complexity of life far from home.
Her passion for working with grieving youth is deeply personal — her own father passed away when she was a teenager, and that experience shaped not only her life but also her calling as a therapist. She knows what it’s like to sit in that confusion and pain, and she brings that understanding into every session with young people facing loss.
She founded Lake Conroe Counseling Center in 2017 with a mission to create a practice that puts both clients and staff first — a place where people feel cared for, not processed. As owner of Lake Conroe Counseling Center and an approved LMFT Supervisor in Texas, Amy also mentors emerging therapists. She’s committed to training clinicians who genuinely care about the people they serve.
Outside the Office
Amy is originally from Kansas City and lived in California before spending nearly two decades abroad. She’s a transplant to Texas (still adjusting) and is a mom to an adult son who grew up internationally and now works in collegiate sports in Fairbanks, Alaska. When she’s not working, you’ll find her reading, playing with her cat, hanging out with family and friends, or plotting her next travel adventure.
