Lisa Vanderpool, M.S., LPC

(She/Her or They/Them)

Hello!  My name is Lisa Vanderpool, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) based in Texas and working with clients statewide via telehealth. I work with adults and teenagers and specialize in anxiety, stress, depression, substance issues, life transitions, trauma and LGBTQ+ issues. I use a blend of therapy techniques including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Solution Focused Therapy (SFT) and Mindfulness techniques to help my clients make progress, start feeling better, and navigate life more successfully.

My approach to therapy is individualized, based on the needs of each client I work with. I most frequently use a blend of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Psychoeducation, Collaborative Language Systems and Mindfulness techniques. These techniques help me, and the client create a shared understanding of their experiences and allow us to work together to find a path forward.

My style and approach are a good fit for adults and teens dealing with anxiety, stress, depression, substance issues, life transitions, obsessive-compulsive (OCD) tendencies, trauma (PTSD), attention issues (ADHD), anger, relationship issues, parenting issues, educational/career paths and LGBTQ+ issues (affirming). I offer practical suggestions that may help to reduce anxiety, depression, overthinking, and improve sleep, healthy habits, communication skills and overall functioning. I teach what is happening in the brain when we experience anxiety and depression.  I love to recommend insightful documentaries or books for better understanding.

My communication style is straight forward, personable, supportive, humorous, compassionate and kind. I want my clients to feel comfortable talking with me about anything, and I listen intently for understanding and clarity, and without judgement. By utilizing telehealth clients can speak from the comfort of their own home, office or vehicle.

My approach to goal setting is working together to define what you want to accomplish in our time together. This starts by building trust and comfortability, identifying your goals, current issues and obstacles, and exploring strengths and areas for improvement. We work together to identify and work towards your goals.

What you can expect from our first session together is for us to talk about how you’ve been feeling, what you’ve been dealing with recently, and me asking questions to better understand what you have been feeling and experiencing. The first session is about us building an initial connection, identifying problems in various areas of your life and finding a path forward, beyond current obstacles to get you closer to your future goals.

I was first attracted to psychology as a teenager, reading my mom’s college textbooks instead of mine. I graduated from Florida International University with a BA in Psychology and entered the field working in various roles within psychiatric facilities for children, teens and adults. I received my master’s degree from Our Lady of the Lake University in Texas in 2013 and began working as a therapist, which was my dream.  I am passionate about psychology, the brain/body connection, and helping people live happier, healthier and more fulfilling lives.
